Abstract
Nissl (Cresyl Violet) staining protocol
Dehydrate sections – 10 dips in each: 50, 70, 80, 90, 100, 100, and 100% ethanol
Leave in xylene for 2min

Rehydrate sections – 10 dips in each: 100, 100, 100, 90, 80, 70, and 50% ethanol
Quick wash in running water
Leave sections in Cresyl Violet for 3min on shake
3m
Leave sections in Citric Acid for 1min
1m
Dip in running water 3x
Dip in Citric Acid 3x
Dip in running water 3x
Leave sections in Cresyl Violet for 2min on shaker
2m
Repeat step 6
Dehydrate sections – 10 dips in each: 50, 70, 80, 90, 100, 100, and 100% ethanol
Leave in Xylene for at least 5min
5m
Coverslip with Xylene + Entellan
